As part of the Ontario Youth Games Review recommendations the SAO conducted the first ever Sport Selection Process for the Ontario Games Program in May 2008. Sports selected to the Games were designated as either a Core or Optional Sport through a comprehensive application process which included Sport Selection Criteria (Eligible athletes, LTAD, Venues/Equipment and Participant Numbers), Athlete Development, Coaching Development and Official Development.
Subsequently the ParaSport Ontario Games program underwent a review which was completed in December 2008. The review identified that the Ontario ParaSport Games should be integrated into the Ontario Winter and Summer Games. It was determined that the best method for integration would be “Voluntary Integration”. Voluntary integration involves inviting PSOs/MSOs that provide ParaSport programming to participate in the Ontario Winter and Summer Games.
A sport is designated a Core Sport by clearly demonstrating how they use the Ontario Games as an integral part of athlete, coach and official’s development. Each Core Sport will be evaluated on their participation in the 2012 Ontario Games. Based on a positive evaluation in which the sport adheres to all of the details within their application for inclusion, they will be guaranteed a spot in the 2014 Ontario Games. If the sport does not adhere to all the details of their application for inclusion into the 2012 Games the sport will have to reapply in order to be selected to participate in the 2014 Ontario Games.
An Optional Sport must also clearly demonstrate how they use the Ontario Games as part of their athlete, coach and/or official’s development within their application while working towards enhancing their application in certain areas to become a Core Sport. All Optional Sports must reapply to participate in the 2014 Ontario Games.
A New Sport to the Ontario Games must submit an application. ALL New Sports successful with their 2012 Ontario Games application will be deemed Optional in 2012 with an opportunity to upgraded to Core Sport in 2014 Ontario Games based on 2012 evaluation and 2014 application.
If you have any questions about the Ontario Games Sport Selection Process please do not hesitate to contact a representative of the Games Department at the Sport Alliance of Ontario.
